Berlin’s Tierpark zoo has welcomed two new additions to its giraffe family this summer, bringing much joy and excitement to both visitors and zoo officials. The naming process for these adorable baby giraffes proved to be quite a challenge, but with the help of a school class and the zoo director’s daughter, suitable names were found.

The first baby giraffe, a bull, was named Berti, inspired by the school class’s mascot, a giraffe named Gisbert. The second baby giraffe, a female, was named Emily, after the zoo director’s teenage daughter who shares a similar height with a newborn giraffe.

These baby giraffes, both endangered Rothschild’s giraffes, join a herd of nine other giraffes, which include their mothers and shared father. Additionally, the excitement doesn’t stop there, as another giraffe, Maude, is pregnant and expected to give birth in September.

On Thursday, the official announcement of Berti and Emily’s names brought further delight. As two of the older cows, Paula and Andrea, elegantly posed for the cameras, with their long, blue tongues on display, the newborn giraffes frolicked in the background, staying close to their mothers for nourishment and play.

Rothschild’s giraffes are captivating creatures, and their presence at the Berlin Tierpark zoo is a reminder of the importance of conservation efforts for endangered species. These new additions provide hope and inspiration for visitors to appreciate the beauty of wildlife and the need to protect our planet’s diverse animal kingdom.
