Berlin, a town committed to embracing technological advancements, is making strides in its effort to introduce electric meters to its community. At the recent meeting of the Berlin Mayor and Council, Electric Utility Director Tim Lawrence shared his plans to request proposals from vendors who can assist in designing, supplying, installing, and implementing Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI).

With Lawrence’s previous experience in AMI metering infrastructure during his tenure in Manassas, Virginia, he brings valuable expertise to the table. AMI systems are comprised of smart meters, like digital gas and electric meters, that record energy consumption and transmit the data back to the utility company in real-time. Having recently completed the installation of water meters for all users, the town is now ready to focus on the electric metering project, which has secured funding through a bond.

Lawrence’s vision for Berlin’s AMI system includes fixed-based automatic meter readings and two-way communication with electric meters. This will not only provide continuous access to collected data, supporting daily operations and customer service, but also enable the monitoring and analysis of system performance using advanced data analytics.

By embracing these modern technologies, Berlin is paving the way for more efficient energy management and improved customer service in the future. This project marks an important step forward in the town’s commitment to its residents and the environment.
