Five artists at Sprüth Magers’ gallery in Berlin are pushing the boundaries of physical and philosophical territory in a groundbreaking group exhibition. Showcasing the works of Mire Lee, Liu Yujia, Gala Porras-Kim, Tan Jing, and Zhang Ruyi, this exhibition delves into the complex nature of borders and their impact on our understanding of space and identity.

Unlike anything previously seen at Sprüth Magers’, this exhibition exclusively features female Asian artists, amplifying their unique perspectives on the concept of boundaries. Each artist explores the limitations of the body and translates them into immersive works that captivate visitors in the downstairs galleries.

For Mire Lee, recipient of the prestigious 2024 Turbine Hall commission at Tate Modern, boundaries serve as a dual force of attraction and repulsion. Through her visceral and provocative works, she uncovers the living essence within her sculptural forms.

Lee’s creations for the Territory exhibition seamlessly build upon her previous explorations of alternate life forms. Drawing from her acclaimed solo exhibition “Look, I’m a fountain of filth raving mad with love,” her sculptures continue to incorporate orifices, holes, and abundant openings. These are juxtaposed with concrete mixers, symbolizing the intersections between human and mechanical existence.

By pushing the boundaries of traditional art practices, Mire Lee challenges viewers to reconsider their perceptions of space, inviting them to engage with her captivating creations on a deeply instinctual and emotional level. In doing so, she invites us to question the very nature of borders, both physical and metaphorical, and the impact they have on our lives.

Through the works of these five artists, Territory invites us to transcend the confines of our known world and embark on a journey of exploration, liberation, and self-discovery. It reminds us that boundaries are not fixed and unyielding, but rather fluid and malleable, encouraging us to embrace the infinite possibilities that lie beyond.
