Behrens-Ufer, an industrial site located in southeast Berlin, is set to undergo a remarkable transformation in the coming years. With the aim of creating a new urban technology hub, this former industrial area on the banks of the River Spree will integrate research, development, and production in a sustainable and historically significant environment. As part of this ambitious endeavor, renowned architecture firm HENN has designed the Vertical Farmhouse, a groundbreaking building that combines innovative workspaces with a lush fruit garden at its core.
The Vertical Farmhouse at Behrens-Ufer is designed as a hybrid construction, comprising two blocks surrounding an ascending terraced rooftop garden. These gardens form a network of pathways, seamlessly connecting the entire complex from the riverside promenade to the rooftop green spaces. An essential feature of this design is a 9,000 square meter vertical farm, which operates harmoniously alongside a fish farm to facilitate sustainable food production.
Drawing inspiration from coastal agricultural landscapes, the rooftop garden of the Vertical Farmhouse is a whimsical orchard adorned with delicate light extensions and overgrown pergolas. Visitors to this space are encouraged to engage with nature and indulge in the pleasure of picking fresh berries and fruits from the trees. The garden serves not only as an oasis for outdoor communication and relaxation, but also as a source of inspiration for the individuals who work within this innovative research and development complex.
